Why We Built My Bike Guard: A Safer Future for Every Cyclist

Watch the full video where our founder and CEO, Poul Christensen, explains the idea and story behind My Bike Guard
At My Bike Guard, we believe every cyclist - whether commuting to work or riding for joy deserves to feel safe on the road. Our story begins with a long-distance ride, a lifelong passion for cycling, and one big question:
What if technology could make group rides safer, smarter, and more supportive?
That question stayed with Poul Christensen, a lifelong cyclist and seasoned software entrepreneur, as he pedalled across Europe. With over 35 years of experience building digital solutions across industries, Poul had never created something just for cyclists, until now. My Bike Guard isn’t just a product. It’s a personal mission to make safety the new standard in cycling.
“I’ve always wanted to build something for everyday users,” Poul explains. “And since cycling has been a big part of my life, it made sense to combine that passion with technology.”
A Ride That Sparked a Mission
In 2024, Poul set off on a five-week, 2,222 km cycling journey from Denmark to Rome. He wasn’t just chasing a personal challenge—he was unknowingly laying the groundwork for a new kind of cycling app. One that puts safety, not speed, at the heart of the ride.
Cycling has been a constant in Poul’s life, from childhood commutes to decades of road cycling. But it was during this long-distance ride that the idea for My Bike Guard truly took shape.
“Riding in large groups made me realize how risky it can be—especially on narrow roads with cars and trucks passing by. I wanted to create something that could make those rides safer.”
Technology That Protects, Not Just Tracks
Unlike traditional cycling apps that focus on performance metrics, My Bike Guard is built around one core principle: safety first. It’s designed to be intuitive and accessible for all cyclists—whether you’re commuting, training, or riding for fun.
One of the most innovative features in development is a group ride safety tool. The app will detect the distance between riders—front, back, and side—to help maintain safe spacing and improve wind protection. It will also guide riders into a single file when vehicles approach and assign a “security score” to encourage safer group behaviour.
“It’s ambitious,” Poul admits, “but we believe it can be a game changer for group rides.”
The team is also exploring how AI can enhance ride security, from predictive alerts to smarter route planning.
Built by Cyclists, for Cyclists
Poul has brought together a passionate, international team of developers, designers, and marketers who share his vision. While the journey is just beginning, the mission is clear: to make cycling safer for everyone, regardless of experience level or bike type.
“We’re building this together with the community. Feedback, ideas, and support from riders will shape what MyBikeGuard becomes.”
His number one safety tip?
“Remember, you’re always the vulnerable one in traffic—don’t take risks.”
And when asked where he’d go on his next dream ride, Poul doesn’t hesitate:
“The Rhine. From the Swiss Alps to the North Sea in the Netherlands. It’s 1,450 km along the EuroVelo 15 route. That’s the next adventure.”
