10 Cycling Safety Tips Every Rider Should Know

At MyBikeGuard, our mission is to help cyclists ride smarter and safer with accessible, connected technology. Whether you're a daily commuter, weekend explorer, or training for your next challenge, safety should never be an afterthought.

And here’s the thing: you’re not alone if you feel uneasy on the road. A recent UK survey found that 8 in 10 cyclists feel unsafe while riding, with many citing close passes, aggressive drivers, and poor infrastructure as top concerns (source).

But the good news? Small changes can make a big difference—and that’s where this guide comes in.

Here are 10 essential cycling safety tips every rider should know—plus how the My Bike Guard app can help you stay protected, connected, and confident on every ride.

1. Wear a Helmet That Actually Fits

It’s not just about wearing a helmetit’s about wearing one that fits snugly and correctly. A loose helmet can shift during a crash, reducing its effectiveness. Look for models that meet EN 1078 standards in Europe, and always replace your helmet after a significant impact or every 5 years.

Pro tip: Use thetwo-finger rule”—you should be able to fit two fingers between your eyebrows and the helmet’s front edge.

2. Do a 60-Second Bike Check Before Every Ride

A quick pre-ride check can prevent mechanical failures that lead to crashes. Here’s a simple checklist:

  • Brakes: Squeeze both levers—do they feel firm?

  • Tires: Are they inflated to the recommended PSI?

  • Chain: Is it clean, lubricated, and moving smoothly?

  • Lights: Are your front and rear lights charged and working?

Make this a habitit’s your first line of defense.

3. Be Seen, Be Safe

Visibility is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents. Even during the day, wear bright or reflective clothing and use daytime running lights. At night, it’s essential to have:

  • A white front light

  • A red rear light

  • Reflectors on pedals and wheels

Fluorescent gear increases visibility during the day, while retro-reflective materials shine under headlights at night.

4. Ride Predictably and Follow the Rules

Cyclists are legally considered vehicles in most countries—so ride like one. That means:

  • Obeying traffic lights and signs

  • Signaling turns clearly

  • Riding in the same direction as traffic

  • Avoiding weaving between cars

Predictable behavior helps drivers anticipate your movements and reduces the risk of collisions.

5. Use Hand Signals Like a Pro

Hand signals are your voice on the road. Use them early and clearly:

  • Left Turn: Left arm straight out

  • Right Turn: Right arm straight out (or left arm bent upward)

  • Stop: Left arm bent downwards

  • Slow Down: Left arm extended downward with palm facing back

  • Give Way: Left arm extended outward with palm facing forward (used to signal yielding or letting others pass)

Practising these until they become second nature can prevent misunderstandings and keep you safer.

6. Stay Alert—No Distractions

It’s tempting to listen to music or check your phone, but distractions can be deadly. Keep your eyes scanning for hazards like potholes, car doors, or turning vehicles. If you use a cycling computer or app, mount it where you can glance at it without looking down for too long.

7. Keep a Safe DistanceEspecially from Parked Cars

The dreadeddooringaccident happens when a car door opens into your path. To avoid it:

  • Ride at least 1 meter away from parked cars

  • Be cautious in narrow bike lanes

  • Watch for brake lights or movement inside parked vehicles

8. Use Smart Cycling Tech to Stay Ahead

Technology is transforming cycling safety. Devices like rearview radars, smart lights, and connected helmets give you real-time awareness of your surroundings.

My Bike Guard integrates seamlessly with your existing radar and smart gear, giving you real-time alerts when vehicles approach from behind or when conditions change. It’s like having a digital co-pilot watching your back.
